For seven years, Ada recorded the sounds of the street outside her apartment. The baker raising his shutter. Rain running through the loose gutter. The bus that sighed twice before leaving the corner.
She labeled each recording with its date and kept the files in carefully named folders. There was a folder for mornings, one for storms, and one she had not opened since her brother moved away.
On Tuesday, the baker took down his sign. A woman named Ren was turning the shop into a place that repaired bicycles.
Ada came downstairs holding her recorder. She wanted the shutter's old rattle one last time.
“It sticks halfway,” she told Ren.
“I know. I'm having the track repaired.”
Ada looked at the dark doorway. “Then it won't sound the same.”
Ren rested a hand on the shutter. “No,” she said. “Probably not.”
There was nothing unkind in the answer, which made Ada feel unexpectedly foolish. She pressed the red button anyway. Ren raised the shutter, paused where it caught, and lifted again. The familiar rattle entered the little machine.
Upstairs, Ada listened to the recording. Behind the shutter she could hear a bird, a passing delivery cart, and herself saying, very quietly, “Wait.”
She played it again. The word bothered her more than the rattle comforted her.
A sound without a label
That afternoon, Ada opened the folder she had avoided. Her brother was trying to teach her a tune by tapping spoons against a saucepan. In the recording, she kept asking him to begin again because the timing was uneven.
Then he laughed, and she laughed too. The tune fell apart completely.
She had forgotten the laughter. She had remembered the afternoon as the last time they cooked together before he left.
Ada reached for her phone and sent him the recording. “Do you remember what we were making?” she wrote.
His answer arrived while she was washing a cup.
“Something we burned. What are you making tonight?”
She stood at the sink, considering the difference between the two questions.
Below her window, a bell rang once, then twice. Ren was testing a bicycle by riding slowly across the pavement. One wheel made a soft ticking sound. She stopped, listened, and wheeled it back inside.
Ada picked up her recorder. Then she put it down beside the cup.
She went downstairs and asked Ren whether she wanted some tea. They sat on the shop's low step while the afternoon changed around them. A child pointed at a red bicycle. Someone asked when the shop would open. Ren said she was still deciding.
Later, Ada could not remember every word of their conversation. She remembered that Ren took her tea without sugar and that the step was warm.
That evening she made soup and called her brother. When he asked about the street, she told him there was a new sound beneath her window.
“Send it to me,” he said.
“Another time,” Ada answered. “Today I just listened.”
