The First Chair — An Aries Story About Beginning

September 14, 2026 · Aries · An original zodiac-inspired story. This is original fiction, not a traditional myth.

For three weeks, Esme planned a reading evening in the unused room above her aunt's shop. She imagined a full audience, a row of lamps and a table where people could leave books they loved.

She designed a poster before she had found any chairs.

The poster said EVERYONE WELCOME in letters large enough to see from the other side of the street. Beneath them, Esme left the date blank.

First she needed the room painted. Then she needed the lamps. Then she decided that a reading evening ought to have a proper name.

Her aunt listened to the names while counting the day's receipts.

“What will people do when they come?”

“Read something aloud. If they want to.”

“And what do you need for that?”

Esme looked at the poster. It had become a very beautiful way of not answering.

Monday at seven

That afternoon, she carried a chair upstairs. The room was plain but clean. Its ceiling light worked. From the window she could hear the grocer stacking empty crates.

She sat down with a short story and read the first paragraph aloud.

The room gave her voice back without complaining about the paint.

Esme wrote Monday, seven o'clock on the poster. Then she changed the invitation: Bring a page you would enjoy reading. Listening is welcome too.

On Monday, she borrowed four more chairs. At five minutes past seven, only her aunt had arrived.

“Perhaps nobody saw it,” Esme said.

“I did.”

Her aunt took a folded letter from her bag. It was from an old friend who had described a disastrous attempt at growing tomatoes. She began reading, and soon Esme was laughing.

A man appeared at the open door. He had followed the sound upstairs. He worked in the grocer's shop and had brought a notebook.

His page was a description of the street before the shops opened. He read quietly. Esme heard the crates, the delivery van and the bakery door in his sentences, but arranged in a way she had never noticed.

When it was her turn, she forgot the introduction she had prepared. She simply said why she liked the story.

They read for half an hour. Then they talked about whether the next evening should begin a little later, after the grocer closed.

There were still two empty chairs. Esme stopped looking at them.

Afterward, she wrote down three things: seven-thirty, leave the door open, keep a chair for someone who only wants to listen.

Her aunt helped her carry the borrowed chairs downstairs.

“Will you paint the room?” she asked.

“Eventually.”

Esme took the poster from the shop window and added a second date. The evening still had no proper name.

It had people who knew when to come back.
